Here are this week’s top three callers:
1. 01254368742 from Blackburn with a tellows score of 7
2. 0166886633 from Bamburgh with a tellows score of 8
3. 01412582118 from Glasgow with a tellows score of 8

We have a new top spam candidate this week: 01254368742 from Blackburn. Citizens of the UK beware, this is a new phone scam method that is about to strike not only Great Britain, but also other English-speaking parts of the world.

There were more than 2000 search requests for this number on Tellows since several cases of PPI fraud attempts have been reported. Fraudsters have been contacting people, saying that they won a PPI claim for the loan somebody apparently had. What loan? Never had one? No matter, cold callers hope to catch people in desperate financial situations to fall for their scam.

Main principle of the scam: the caller is trying to convince people that they are owed money for an unclaimed PPI insurance. The method of the fraudulant calls is simple: assuming the called person has a loan, stating exactly how much money the person is owed by the unclaimed insurance and offering their service of getting the client’s money back – after prior payment, of course.

After other scams, such as the so-called „PC doctor“, lotteries or surveys, fraudsters are now trying to be paid for gaining money back for clients who had an unclaimed payment protection insurance (PPI). PPI, also known as credit insurance, insures consumers that they will be able to pay off their debt in the case of losing their income source or in case of illness or death. The difference between serious insurance agencies and fraudsters is that the latter will ask consumers to pay for the service in advance and/or give out their bank details on the phone.

As many Tellows users reported, the number followed the classical scheme of sending out ping calls first in order to check whether phone numbers are active. babs reported:

This number rings my mobile every day. I do not answer. I looked up number is Accrington Lancs,. I always leave it to go to voicemail. never leave a message. Have now reported it to my network provider. I withheld number and rang it. A machine picked it up, said Elsworth Associates.

First complaints about PPI matters from this number were lodged since the end of June. User scott wrote:

they are a ppi company that can claim cash back on loans etc, it is possible on mobiles to block a certain phone number like this one. hassling us peeps ive blocked the number so good luck.

User Carol is not impressed at all:

Called asking to help me „claw back PPI“ when I said I didn’t require their services they said they would remove me from their database. Yeah, right!

Beware and don not fall for this. In order to prevent other scam methods to flourish, do not hesitate to report spam/scam numbers and their ways to Tellows. Thank you for your cooperation!

Yours,
Team Tellows

By contrast, many calls from unrecognized phone numbers are actually intended to occur while you’re having your meal. Now that you are armed with an option that will allow you to end those annoying calls, the ball is in your court to deal with your situation or not.

Just had a long chat with a cold caller claiming to want to refund PPI paid for a loan I had in 2005, Asian accent named James Wood from County Court on behalf of Lloyds TSB. call back telephone 0208 32874468 ext001 with an authorisation no of UKASS voucher for £280 to pay the commission and to activate my £2500 refund. Must have thought I born yesterday!! but beware he stated he had someone wanting to deliver the cash and cheque for the money today, but would not tell me how he obtained my details, i.e. name address telephone no. etc.

Spoken to ‚Oscar William‘ regarding my so called PPI cheque that’s to be delivered to my home, by a ‚Mr Eric Wilson‘! But I needed to purchase UKASH Vouchers totalling £230 as commission. All this before I had even paid the so called cheque, into my bank. Well Oscar……. Up yours!!!!!
The telephone number I spoke to this creep on 0208 123 6623 just in case anyone else receives a call.

I got a call from a guy called Tom Smith who said he was calling from City County Court and he had a cheque for £3100 for me and I should get Kash Vouchers to pay their commision. The number they used was 0203 289 7235. This number rings out when called but they will call back to try and get you to commit to payment.

We’ve just had one – 0203 2897235 – said he was from the despatch department of the City County Court of London 137 Prinsley Road. Foreign – think Indian or Asian – was suspicious straight away so hence asking the address and then how he got my details. He said he was working on behalf of the government that because I hadn’t made a claim against this loan I had, it had automatically gone through the courts and the cheque had been automatically sanctioned and ready to be delivered. I asked why it couldn’t be sent in the post, he said that it had to be delivered by a Governement Official and the person receiving the cheque would have to show ID. I was already more suspicious but wanted to get as much information as possible. I then asked if there would be any payments – he said no – they were a governement department there would be no admin charges or any commission. However, once we had received the cheque and it had cleared we would need to pay 10% to an independent solicitor that was used to sort out the cheque in the first place. I asked if this would only be payable ONCE we had received the cheque and the money had cleared and he said yes. He also said that when the cheque arrived there would be legal forms – 2 copies – to be signed and one copy kept by me – but if we were not happy at any point we could just send them away. I could see why people could be easily taken in by this. Basically EVERYONE needs to be aware that PPI does not happen unless YOU initiate the claim and also it has nothing to do with the Courts – they are not involved and would not be automatically sending payments out. If you are owed money – you have to chase it yourself. BE AWARE.

What happened following the call John?
I have just had the same one.

had a call from guy called Mark from county court of london asian accent said there is a cheque for £3000 ready to be delivered. i have to buy pay safe vouchers value of £225.00and give them the 16 digit pin number so that they can authorise an officer to deliver the cheque. the number he called from is 0208 1444171 and 01924 847171. Be aware.

  12. Clive

Called today told me I had 3100 from a loan I had , needed to buy 175 of passage vouchers before the rep turns up. Said it was to assure them I had bought them they would only ask for time and date of purchase,
Asked him how I was due thisPpi when I had already claimed it back last year. Didn’t have an answer said the courts had sorted it. Load of BS don’t fall for it.

  13. Louis potts

Had a phone call today from London county court to tell me that they have s cheque for £3100 that the court has awarded me ,I called them back and said I needed to by some pay safe vouchers so the courier could hand me the cheque and paper work,I thought this might be a scam as I could hardly understand the guy ,his name was Mark an Asian guy
The phone number he used is 02081332783
May be the police will look into this

  14. Steve

I got a call from a asian guy called Mark who said he was calling from London County Court and he had a cheque for £3100 for me for an unclaimed PPI and I should get Government Issued Vouchers to pay their commision, when the chequed had cleared in my bank account. He said that a court official would come to my door to deliver the cheque. The number they asked me to ring was 0203 2392695 to confirm that it was legit and ask for Mr Simon Turner.

I did have an unclaimed PPI and his information about it was correct. This is quite frightening sending a person to my door to personally deliver a cheque????

I told him that he sounded dodgy and that he should post me details confirming what he had told me and cancel the delivery. He was very practiced in his patter and even had me taking down details such as my own personal reference number (before he told me about the Government Issued Voucher I should say) using rubbish like F for Foxtrot and E for echo etc… .

This is a very polished scam artist, who has knowledge of personnel details. Watch out? because the police can’t be?

  15. Steve

I was called, out of the blue, by telephone from a asian guy, called Mark, who said he was calling from London County Court and he had a cheque of £3100 for an unclaimed PPI. I was using a company to fight the PPI claim for me so I took notice. He had details of the company who many years ago had sold me the PPI so I took more notice:- Not many people besides myself and the company who sold me the PPI could have known this (of course the company fighting the PPI claim would have known, cannot think of any more).

I was then informed that a courier, a Mr Simon Turner, was on his way to present me with the cheque. He then dropped the bomb shell that I would now have to purchase Government issued/Safe vouchers for around £200, before the courier arrived so I could prove that they would get their commission. Of course I then started quizzing him, and informed him that I would have to see the cheque cleared in my bank account before any negotiation on his payment would be made. I asked „who are you?“ The number they asked me to ring was 0203 2392695 which I assumed was the telephone number of the address they gave me: City County Court of London, 137 Finchley Road, London.

I told him that this sounded dodgy and that he should post me details confirming what he had told me and cancel the delivery. He was very practiced in his patter and even had me taking down details such as my own personal reference number to enable me to claim the cheque.

This is a very polished scam artist, who has knowledge of personnel details. Watch out! Never pay anybody anything unless you are certain that you owe it (definitely asking in writing with contact details). Of course, if someone want to put £3100 pound in your bank account and you pay him 10% back when it has cleared, well that is probably negotiable, but, seriously, not realistic.

  16. Jennifer franklin

I just had a phone call saying I have a cheque for £3000 owing to me, I check the address and saw this is a scam, Thay wanted me to get a pay card costing £200 which I would have to give the man when the cheque was cleared, so I told him this is a scam and put the phone down,

  17. Julie bishop

I’ve had several calls from an Asian man called Mark White
Saying he is from county court Finchley Road,
He said that they would deliver a cheque , then when it cleared
I would have to pay 8% commission , however I would need to get a paysefe card befor I got the cheque. The number he said I could call him on if I had any problems was 02081234101
This is definitely a scam, county courts do not deal with stuff like that

  18. Mick

Has the same experience yesterday, they called me on my mobile came up as private number , he sounded very convincing the guy said his name was Roger James even gave me a reference number RAG 123619 phone number 02081235101,
said a guy Simon Turner would come and deliver a cheque for PPI with paperwork to sign within an hour or two once I had the pay safe cards with £50 on each, smelt a rat when started asking for money on pay safe cards saying they did not want any bank account or card numbers for my safety , he even told me where to get the pay safe cards from 3 locations (supermarkets) with in a few minutes walk from my house
I then started asking him for his company address ,company registration number and VAT number, he said all info was on the web site 137 Finchley Rd.
when asked when they could come to my house I told him I was away on holiday in another part of the county and to send all paperwork to my address as he already had this information,
said he would call me next week.
can’t block the number as it came in as private number

I’m even tempted to string them along next time and have the police waiting for them??

  19. Magret Mwambokolo

They are on my back these scammers Steve Rodgers on 02081448767 and they promised me a cheque £2750-00 with the reference number STE 4895 and he is sending an officer called Steve Martin. The guy referred me to his supervisor Asian accent. They want me to buy a paysafe of 200 pounds for confirmation which I dont understand how that works with them sending me a cheque.

  20. Vijay

    I received a call from a man with an Indian accent who gave his name Roger James of City County Court London of 227 Strand, London, telephone 02036085792;

Another man with an Asian accent calling himself Mark Hurst stated that:
    – a PPI sum of £4,500 was obtained for me from RBS;
    – a Mr Simon Turner will be visiting me with a cheque and two copies of a claim form for signing;
    – a 5% (£225) Commission is payable to City County Court London, but this can only be be done by a iTunes vouchers to the value of the Commission, which he stated could be purchased from my local Sainsbury store or Post Office and the reference codes provided to them in order to clear the cheque.

When I asked why iTunes which is an Apples brand names, why I shouldbspend any money when my alleged PPI cheque remained uncleared and whether this was a scam, he reiterated that the Despatch Officer would visit me today with the cheque. I laughed and hung up, Beware of these fraudsters, I say!

  21. clare mccarthy

    SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!
    These guys are scum bags!!
praying on vulnerable people.. which I’m luckily not.

They had information about my legitimate claim – they also have my home address and obviously my phone number.
Similar to everyone on this page wanted cash from me but claiming I pay them when my cheque clears, I was passed on to a 2nd Asian man who still couldn’t convince me to do what he said. Don’t fall for this scam!!

  22. Ania

Call received just now form an Asian man called John Stellar (yeah, really???) who said he was from City County Court London with a cheque for £3,750 for me from PPI on my Santander loan! That an agent would call with the cheque today, but that I had to buy a £225 iTunes card as their commission! Gave me a reference number and everything, but the worrying thing is, he knew I’d had a Santander loan, so clearly someone has obtained this detail form me and sold it on to someone else. Beware, don’t let them take you in!!

  23. steve

just had a phone call someone Asian called jonathan evens, as if saying a cheque for £3,080 was being delivered at 6-30 ,involving county court ppi advisory and to have a apple gift card to the value of £100 to pay the courier, gave me account numbers i.d numbers and even a password using phone number 02071930627,hes supposed to be ringing back tomorrow but having been on this site has convinced me that its a scam, beware people he was very convincing

I had a phone call saying £5211 was owed to me for PPI. He said someone would visit my address with the cheque and would present it after id from me. He said he did not need any bank numbers from me. He said all they needed was an admin cost of £200 which he said I needed to get Amazon vouchers to give to the courier. I asked his name which was given as Damiel Green. The courier Susan Hopkins. Telephone number 02081339197. The courier is visiting me this afternoon but I will only receive the cheque which has to be cleared before I will give any money for admin.
